Benefits of a BSN Degree

Why is it advantageous to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through a program such as the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program at Notre Dame of Maryland University over other nursing degree options? Nursing is one of the most in-demand professions in the United States. It is projected to be for much of the next decade due to the aging population and growing complexities of patient care, among other reasons.

As a result, more and more health care employers no longer consider a BSN a “nice-to-have” credential for nursing candidates they’re considering—many are making a bachelor’s degree in nursing a job requirement for entry-level registered nurse positions.

Stand Out to Employers

What’s the one reason health care employers prefer to hire BSN-educated nurses? A growing body of research shows an undeniable correlation between more baccalaureate nurses on staff and improved patient outcomes. NDMU’s ABSN program helps students build strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, evidence-based skills, and leadership—so they can spot patient issues sooner and provide high-quality, holistic care.

More Opportunities

Having a BSN will also open the doors for many career advancement opportunities inside and outside the hospital setting, should you pursue an advanced degree. A BSN is a prerequisite for pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing and other advanced practice nursing (APN) certificates, which set the stage for such career paths as:

  • Nurse anesthetist
  • Nurse educator
  • Nurse midwife
  • Nurse practitioner

Better Patient Outcomes

Providing safe, effective care is a cornerstone of your ABSN education. Many studies, including this study published with the National Library of Medicine, also find that hospitals with more BSN-prepared nurses on staff have lower patient mortality rates, health care costs related to lower re-admission rates, and shorter length of stay for patients.
